Arts
Arts College Prep Portfolio
(Grade 11–Up)
Since 2023, every high school student who has worked with Sectioned Studio has been accepted to their target schools, including Parsons, SVA, SCAD, and other leading art and design programs.
The Arts College Prep Program is a customized 1:1 portfolio course designed for students in Korea and abroad who are preparing for art and design admissions in the United States. Over the course of 6 to 12 months, students aim to complete 10–15 high-quality portfolio pieces through a structured and personalized curriculum.
Each lesson is tailored to the student’s strengths, interests, and goals. Through in-depth consultation and continuous guidance, we help students build a narrative-driven portfolio that clearly reflects their artistic voice, major fit, and individual strengths. Most projects require 6–10 sessions to complete, ensuring depth and refinement. Students work on weekly assignments and receive critiques during class, addressing challenges in concept development, material exploration, visual expression, and composition strategy with their tutor.
In U.S. art and design admissions, a strong portfolio must be supported by an equally aligned Statement of Purpose (SOP). Sectioned Studio provides each student with a clear direction and storytelling framework, ensuring that their SOP meaningfully connects to their portfolio and reinforces their application narrative.
At Sectioned Studio, we go beyond teaching technical skills—we guide students in shaping a compelling artistic identity and presenting their potential in the most persuasive way, leading them confidently toward successful admissions outcomes.

MFA Portfolio
To be accepted into an MFA program, it is essential to present more than just high-quality artwork. Applicants must clearly articulate why they are applying to that specific MFA program and present a compelling, well-reasoned purpose. These points must be addressed explicitly within both the
SOP and the portfolio narrative:
-
What artistic or research themes the applicant intends to explore
-
What specific resources—faculty, facilities, curriculum—the school can provide
-
How the program will expand the applicant’s artistic direction and career after graduation
-
What contributions the applicant can make to the school community and peer cohort
-
How the applicant’s past work and research align with the department’s philosophy and focus
These five criteria form the core of MFA admissions evaluation, and the portfolio must clearly reflect this direction and alignment.
Beginning this year, Sectioned Studio has refined and expanded its MFA preparation system, offering three specialized tracks based on the applicant’s background.
1. MFA Track for Non-Art Majors
-
Focus on discovering artistic/research themes and building an early visual language
-
Portfolio developed from the ground up, starting with foundational work to experimental projects
-
Emphasis on expanding conceptual thinking, developing ideas, and constructing a coherent narrative
2. MFA Track for Art/Design Majors (Graduating Students)
-
Reorganizing existing undergraduate work to meet MFA-level standards
-
Producing new work to fill gaps and establishing a strong conceptual structure for the full portfolio
-
Comprehensive guidance from defining the research theme → setting project direction → constructing cohesive series

Architecture
M.Arch Portfolio
(For Non-Architecture
Majors)
6-12 month
Most M.Arch programs are designed for non-architecture majors, and many applicants apply without any formal architectural background. Because of this, M.Arch portfolios do not require prior architectural knowledge or design skills.
What schools truly evaluate is how you understand and interpret space, and whether you can translate your thinking into your own visual language. Rather than imitating professional architectural drawings, the focus should be on observation, concept, narrative, and creative modes of representation.
However, many non-architecture students spend excessive time trying to replicate “five-year B.Arch–style portfolios,” which often leads to inefficient work and does not demonstrate the qualities that M.Arch programs actually look for.
As with any field, architecture has foundational ways of thinking and essential knowledge that newcomers must grasp. Exploring diverse materials, subjects, and methods—and going through the cycle of idea → investigation → visualization—is what builds true architectural thinking.
Sectioned Studio’s program for non-architecture majors begins by identifying the student’s architectural potential within their existing academic background and interests.
From there, we guide students to use experimental imagery, drawing, collage, and diagramming to naturally express architectural sensibility throughout their portfolio.
Ultimately, our goal is to help students develop a portfolio that amplifies their individuality—a portfolio that highlights the unique strengths of a non-architecture background while meeting the expectations of top M.Arch programs.
M.Arch II Portfolio
(For Architecture Majors /
Related Majors)
Depends on Student Progress
Usually 2-6month
The M.Arch II portfolio is evaluated primarily on the depth of undergraduate work, the maturity of design thinking, and the applicant’s ability to analyze and reorganize projects with clarity and structure. Overall visual quality also matters greatly—each project should include compelling key images or diagrams that immediately capture attention. Spatial logic, diagrammatic organization, and consistency of visual language are essential elements.
At Sectioned Studio, we work closely with students to restructure their undergraduate projects and professional work, refining narrative, process, diagrams, and graphics into a polished, advanced-level architectural portfolio.
In addition to the portfolio, a strong application must clearly articulate why the student is pursuing graduate school.
A compelling statement of purpose should include:
-
What you want to research
-
How the school’s faculty, curriculum, or resources will support that research
-
How graduate studies will shape your long-term career
-
What contributions you can make to the school or studio culture
-
Whether your past academic or professional work meaningfully aligns with the program you’re applying to
Starting this year, we have expanded and refined our graduate-school preparation program based on years of successful admissions experience. The course is now divided into more specialized tracks:
-
For graduating architecture majors – students who lack a portfolio or need to build one from the ground up
-
For applicants with existing architectural work – students who have projects but need guidance on restructuring the portfolio for international applications, as well as support with the statement of purpose, interviews, and other components
Job Portfolio
Sectioned Studio offers a two-track career portfolio program for both domestic (Korea) and international employment. With years of experience guiding students through architecture career portfolios, we have helped applicants secure positions at major Korean firms such as HAEAHN Architecture, GANSAM Architects, and Kunwon Engineering.
For the international track, our instructors include architects who currently work—or have previously worked—at leading global offices such as Rogers Partners, BIG, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, and KPF.
With this strong professional foundation, we guide students in creating portfolios that are truly compelling from an interviewer’s perspective.
In a career portfolio, the priority is not abstract “creativity,” but rather how clearly and succinctly you communicate your real professional capabilities.
Firms focus on the following:
– Your role and contributions in each project
– The accuracy and precision of drawings and renderings
– Your problem-solving process and design logic
– Your communication skills with teams and clients
Sectioned Studio designs page structures, graphic systems, and narrative strategies tailored to the culture and expectations of each target firm.
We help students articulate their roles, achievements, and project workflows in a clear and logical way, resulting in a portfolio that highlights genuine professional strength.
In addition, we provide comprehensive support across all stages of the application process, including resume writing, cover letters, and interview preparation.
